Description:

Prosper Vallee is listed as being in Philadelphia from 1826 to 1840. The locks are signed "P Vallee". The Damascus pattern barrels are signed "P. VALLEE PHILADELPHIA" and have "R.H" and "1" between Birmingham proofs. "A" also has a dot on the plug and barrel at the breech, "LD" ahead of the wedge staple, and a string of four dots just behind the rib. "B" also has "FI" behind the wedge, "D" ahead of the wedge, and a string of three dots behind the rib. The same number of dots from each gun is marked inside the barrel channel of the stocks, and the "B" stock also has an "X." The breech plugs are engraved and have gold and platinum inlaid bands. The trigger guards enclose adjustable single set triggers and have decorative "pineapple" finials. The locks and furniture have primarily floral scroll and border engraving. The period wooden case has a brass lid plaque inscribed "H. Pratt McKean/Phila". There were multiple Henry Pratt McKeans across a few generations of the influential McKean family in Pennsylvania. Henry Pratt McKean (1810-1894), the grandson of Thomas McKean, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, would be the most appropriate owner of these pistols.

The engraving and markings are clear. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine with a few minor dings and scratches on the exterior and some minor contact wear and soiling on the lining.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The barrel retains 60% original thin brown finish with most of the Damascus pattern remaining and some mottled patina mostly on the right side. The hammer, lock, and barrel tang have a smooth gray patina. The trigger guard retains 85% original bright blue finish with scattered flaking and a smooth brown patina on the exposed areas. The stock is fine with a thin vertical crack from the trigger up to the breech, a few minor dents and dings, some attractive figure, and crisp checkering. The markings and engraving are clear. The set trigger needs some work, but the lock is mechanically excellent.
