Description:

Sempert & Krieghoff was founded in 1886. This rifle has a windage adjustable semi-globe front sight, "SEMPERT & KRIEGHOFF, SUHL" in gold on top ahead of bases for a claw type scope mount, "BUG" proofs, "118/35" (the caliber is likely 9.3x72mm) along with "SS" and an "S" on the bottom of the barrel, "5425" on the bottom of the barrel and front of the frame as well as the back of the buttplate, an adjustable rear peep sight in an integral base, adjustable double set triggers, an extended finger groove lever, a Tyrolean style relief carved buttstock, sling swivels, and a single hook Swiss style buttplate. The barrel is decorated with a silver band and dots at the muzzle and a pair of gold bands and silver scroll patterns with gold dot accents at the breech. The frame has a woman in Renaissance era costume and a putto holding a target with an arrow in the bullseye on the right, a man in Renaissance attire with a rifle and another putto with a single headed reichsadler style target on the left, and classic Germanic scroll and floral engraving with finely textured backgrounds on the balance. The lever has additional engraving surrounding a Fursten crown over a script "E" suggesting the rifle belonged to a German prince, perhaps Prince Eugen of Schaumburg-Lippe. The forearm and buttstock have checkering and raised and relief carved floral scroll patterns that coordinate with the engraving along with a detailed scene of a marksman and barmaid on the left behind the cheekpiece in an alpine scene. .

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine with 60% plus original finish, aged patina on the silver inlays, bright original gold inlays, crisp engraving, minor patination, and generally only light handling and storage wear. The wood is very fine and has crisp relief carving and checkering, minor edge wear, some light dings and scratches, and a slight gap at the toe. Mechanically excellent. Definitely a very attractive rifle from one of Germany's most respected firms.
