Engraved H. Holland Side by Side Double Rifle with Case

This small underlever double rifle was manufactured c. 1875 and retailed by Harris Holland before the creation of the famed English firm Holland & Holland. It has a blade front sight, notch rear sight with two folding leaves, "H. HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND ST. LONDON." on top at the breech, scroll and floral engraving, and a nicely figured stock and forearm with checkering. The leather takedown case has "EDWARD COPE/Lenton Firs/near/NOTTINGHAM" inscribed on the escutcheon. Edward William Cope of Lenton Firs was a conservative magistrate in Nottingham.

ConditionFine as refinished/restored with essentially all of the blue finish and bright case colors remaining, some pitting concentrated under the forearm, crisp engraving and checkering, slight gap where the stock meets the back of the frame, and a small flake at the edge by the lower tang. Mechanically fine. The relined case is very good with mild storage wear. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
