Description:

This Springfield Armory M1 Garand rifle was manufactured in March 1944 and converted to M1D sniper configuration by Springfield Armory c. 1951-1953. Springfield Armory converted 21,380 M1 rifles to M1D configuration during this period. These rifles, along with M1D rifles converted at various Army depots during the 1960s, served as the primary Army sniper rifle until the Vietnam Conflict. M1D rifles remained in inventory as secondary sniper rifles in Army National Guard units thru the early 1990s. This rifle has the special M1D barrel with threaded scope mounting block marked: "S-A-7-51" on the right side of the chamber along with two "P" proof marks. The rifle has the special M1 D lower handguard, M1D telescopic sight mount with large knurled knob, M84 2.2 X Telescopic Sight, stamped M2 Flash Hider and russet leather cheek pad. The M84 Telescopic Sight is blued with a cross and post-wire cross-hair, sliding sun shade and rubber eyepiece. The plate on the right side of the scope is marked: "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL NO. 7102" in three lines. The flash hider mount is stamped with the Hart logo, "FLASH HIDER M2/THE HART MFG. CO.". The right side of the cheek pad is stamped: "MRT/11-62". The rifle has the standard Springfield Armory marks on the heel above the serial number "2775051". The rifle was overhauled following WWII or during the 1951-53 M1D conversion and has post- war, "Type 3" rear sight, "D85382 SA" operating rod with relief cut, late style gas cylinder plug and roll pin in the upper barrel band. The rifle has an "SA -12" trigger housing with milled trigger guard. All the metal components have the black-green parkerized finish utilized by Springfield Army during the 1950s. The rear face of the barrel chamber is bright. The upper and lower hand guards and stock are matching, oil-finished, walnut. The left side of the stock is stamped with the "Eagle/Star" National Defense final inspection mark in a rectangle. A single, encircled, serifed "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside of the pistol grip. A rack number "548" is stenciled in white on the right side of the butt. This rifle appears to be in the correct M1D configuration as assembled by Springfield Armory C. 1951-1953.

Rating Definition:

Very fine. The rifle is correct as arsenal-overhauled by Springfield Armory to M1D configuration. The receiver, barrel, telescopic sight mount and other components retain 95% plus of the black-green parkerized finish with light cycling wear on the receiver rails and bolt lugs. The checkering on the buttplate shows light high-point wear. The muzzle crown is sharp. The M84 Telescopic sight retains 99% of the original blue finish. The optics are clear. The rubber eyepiece is in mint condition. The leather cheek piece is medium russet brown with a few scattered handling marks and sharp MRT and date markings. The stock and handguard are excellent with perfect final inspection and proof marks. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant storage marks. This is an exceptional example of a Springfield Armory M1 rifle modified to M1D configuration by Springfield Armory during the initial M1D assembly program. It would be difficult to find a better example of this desirable U.S. sniper rifle.
