Rare Remington-UMC Factory Cutaway Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an exceptionally rare Remington-UMC factory cutaway of a Model 1911 pistol. An example of an original Remington-UMC pistol should be considered fairly rare as only 21,676 total were actually manufactured. However in this configuration, as a cutaway it is probably one of only a handful ever manufactured, likely for training or demonstrator purposes. These pistols were manufactured in late 1918/19 using their own drawings, as those provided by Colt and Springfield Armory were inadequate. Consequently most of these pistols were disposed of after World War I. This rare example has been cutaway in multiple areas, primarily on the right side of the pistol, including the right grip removed, to show the inner workings. The left of the slide is marked with the standard three-line two-block address and patent dates separated by the circled Remington-UMC logo and the right of the slide has the standard model and caliber marking, partially obstructed by a cutaway section. The left of the frame has the U.S. property marking. The pistol has no serial number, no proofs, and no inspectors markings, indicating that it was likely manufactured for in-factory use, possibly during the pre-production phase, to teach Remington employees the manufacturing process. It is fitted with the standard features of Remington-UMC production Model 1911 pistols. A similar example is pictured on p. 215 of "U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920" by Ellis/Meadows, however this example has more cutaway sections.

ConditionExcellent, retains 90% plus original blue finish with light cycling marks, primarily on high spots, exposing a smooth grey patina. The grip (right grip never fitted by the factory for display purposes) is also excellent with minimal light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent for demonstration.
