Imperial Japanese Type 99 Mortar, Class III/NFA Destructive Device

Introduced in the 1930s, the Type 99 was an 81mm mortar used by the Imperial Japanese Army. Contrary to most mortars of the Stokes pattern, which use a fixed firing pin to automatically detonate the propellant charge when the round reaches the bottom of the tube, the Type 99 has a manual firing mechanism, initiated by striking a heavy steel stud with a mallet; while this introduces another step to the firing procedure and adds moving parts, it also allows gunners to keep a weapon pre-loaded and fire instantly at the ideal moment . The Type 99 could be used with conventional high explosive rounds, smoke emitters, and an unusual parachute-assisted cluster bomb designed to create a sort of aerial minefield against low flying planes. A series of Japanese markings, including the serial number, are present on the lower cap for the firing tube, which also integrates the trigger mechanism. The tripod is fitted with a hydraulic shock damping array, with on-board adjustments and a dovetail slot for a sight. Sight and baseplate not included.

ConditionVery good, with most of the surface having turned a mixed brown patina with mild spotting and handling marks overall. The area around the nomenclature and serial number are clearly legible. The firing mechanism and tripod appear to be in good working order. NOTE: This Destructive Device is a National Firearms Act (NFA), fully transferable Class 3, which is registered with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, (BATFE) under the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478. Provenance: Brandhorst Collection
