An evolution of the Mauser 1871 Infantry Rifle, the 71/84 integrates an under-barrel tube magazine, and represents an important developmental step towards the Gewehr 98 rifle. Blade and three-leaf folding ladder sights, with the barrel marked "crown/F.W." and "crown/SPANDAU" on the chamber flats, and the receiver marked "I.G. Mod. 71/84." on the left and "1888." on the right. Smooth straight grip stock, with sling swivels and a flat buttplate. With an unmarked bayonet, 16 3/4 inches overall, 11 3/4 inch single fuller blade, bright steel hilt, smooth wood grip scales and a blued sheath.

Excellent plus. The blued components show 98% plus bright original color, the bayonet lug and high edges, and the bright components are very bright, with both showing some light spotting, traces of storage grease, and mild handling marks. Save for a patch of active denting on the left side of the buttstock the wood is excellent plus with a few light dings and scratches. The excellent bayonet is bright overall, with some light spotting on the hilt and a heavy coat of protective grease on the blade. Mechanically excellent.
