Description:

These revolvers were originally contracted to be manufactured by Tucker, Sherrard & Co. of Lancaster Texas c. 1861-1862. The company became Clark, Sherrard & Co. after the war and produced a limited number of these Dragoon revolvers c. 1866-1867. Tucker, Sherrard & Co. held a contract with the Confederate State of Texas for 1,500 .44 caliber revolvers and 1,500 .36 caliber revolvers, but manpower and raw material shortages due to wartime measures prevented them from fulfilling their contract, and it was terminated in 1863. Exactly how many revolvers were actually completed during the war remains disputed with some believing at least some of the revolvers were completed and sold on the open market given distinct differences in groups of the surviving revolvers. However, the majority of the very limited surviving examples were assembled and finished after the war by Clark, Sherrard & Co. A.S. Clark, the firm's foreman, wrote in 1867 that they had "about 400 caliber /44 old style army revolvers which we plan to embellish into high class merchandise. We are prepared to furnish you a dozen at $20 gold each." This revolver was one of the revolvers given "high class" etching on the barrel and cylinder. In "Confederate Revolvers" by Gary, only four etched cylinder examples are noted: 115, 231, 249, and 288 in addition to plain revolvers 308 and 404. Gary states that these revolvers were not manufactured using parts leftover from the unfulfilled Texas contract and doubts 400 were ever completed based on how few have survived compared to other Southern revolvers that were manufactured in even more limited numbers that actually saw use during the war. No matter the case, only a very limited number of these revolvers were actually completed, with a profound lineage as Confederate and Texas made. The barrel has a pin front sight and "CLARK, SHERRARD & CO/LANCASTER TEXAS" etching with floral accents. The cylinder has "TEXAS/star/ARMS" and floral and martial motif etching. The loading lever is marked "3," and the wedge, barrel, frame, trigger guard, and back strap have "115." It comes in a wood case with a Colt's patent dual cavity bullet mold, cap tin, conical bullets, and a few small parts. The case lid has "This Revolver by John D Hanning all through/the Rebellion better the north & The South" in pencil. Included documents from the Brooklyn Historical Society state the revolver was owned by 1st Lt. John D. Hanning (1838-1883) of E Company of the 2nd Rhode Island Cavalry who served from January 15 to August 28 of 1863 and was discharged in New Orleans. The revolver was donated to the society in 1976 by Dr. Howard B. Hanning after being passed down through the Hanning family.

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine overall with distinct etching, mottled gray and brown patina on the steel, dark aged patina on the brass grip frame, flaws and rough finishing on the hammer and a few other spots, mild pitting, and general mild overall wear mostly from age and storage. The cylinder safety pins remain mostly solid. There is no effective loading notch, but the revolver is otherwise mechanically fine. The case and accessories are all fine and have mild age and storage related wear. The case lid has a repair on the rear. This is quite possibly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain a documented cased Texas made Dragoon revolver manufactured by Clark, Sherrard & Co.
