Description:

Operating out of New Orleans, Thomas, Griswold & Company manufactured and imported military material for the Confederacy from August 1861, when the firm of Hyde & Goodrich was reorganized to make Henry Thomas Jr. and A.B. Griswold the senior partners, to April of 1862, when the Union Occupation of New Orleans went into effect. Like most Confederate makers, the firm used antebellum U.S. Army regulation patterns with this particular sword and scabbard being based on the U.S. Model 1840 Artillery Saber. The overall length is just under 37 inches, and the curved blade measures 31 1/2 inches straight across and is stamped 'T.G. & Co/N.O" on the left ricasso. The brass hilt is plain, and it has a leather and wire wrapped wood grip and brass scabbard.

Rating Definition:

Fine and highly attractive for a Confederate edged weapon with blunted tip, mottled gray patina and light pitting along the blade, attractively aged patina on the brass hilt and scabbard, moderate wear on the grip including some small cracks and chips, and general mild overall wear such as scratches, light dings, and a few dents in the scabbard.
