Very Fine Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 First Issue Second Type Revolver with Scarce Factory Gutta Percha Case

The Smith & Wesson No. 1 First Issue revolvers were the first Smith & Wesson revolvers. This revolver is the "Second Type" manufactured within the 200-1130 serial number range earlier on the 1857-1860 production run of the First Issue revolvers and has a German silver blade front sight, "SMITH & WESSON. SPRINGFIELD. MASS." on top of the barrel, notch rear sight, Rollin White patent marking on the cylinder, revolving recoil plate, bayonet style barrel latch, and matching serial numbers on the rear of the barrel lug, face of the cylinder, butt, and inside of both grips. This variation of the gutta percha cases available for the No. 1 revolvers is the rarer later style with six flags at the center around a pair of cannons and pile of cannon balls, scroll patterns around the exterior, brushes and a painter's palette in the upper left corner, scythe and wheat in the upper right corner, anchor on the bottom right, and compass and square in the lower left corner of the lid; small revolvers as the border on the bottom, embossed scroll patterns inside the lid, and a mostly full cartridge block. Per the NRA Museums: "the firm later offered an optional gutta percha case for an additional charge of $1.25. Approximately 5,000 of these cases, which were produced by Littlefield, Parsons & Co., included a bas relief design featuring the revolver and the Smith & Wesson name on the lid. These cases are rarely encountered today."

ConditionVery fine with 90% original silver plating, 60% original blue, minor oxidation/pitting, and general minor scratches and marks. The grips are fine and have mild edge wear including some small chips/flakes, light scratches, and mild handling wear. The cylinder does not always advance properly, but the revolver is otherwise mechanically fine. The case is very good and has mild age and storage related wear and a chip on the lower right corner of the lid and displays a brown tone on the exterior and crisp patterns. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
