Documented North-West Mounted Police Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Carbine with Factory Letter and Accessories

This is an example of a Winchester Third Model 1876 Northwest Mounted Police Carbine was manufactured in 1885 and would have been part of a large order by the N.W.M.P. in preparation for the North-West Rebellion. The gun is listed by serial number on page 185 in "Arms & Accoutrements of The Mounted Police 1873-1973" by Phillips and Klancher. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address/King's patent dates in front of the rear sight, the brass elevator is marked "45-75", the upper tang is marked "MODEL. 1876.", and the serial number is marked on the lower tang. Blade front sight and folding ladder "Spanish Meter" rear sight graduated 2-10 on the ladder and 1-5 on the left side of the base. A saddle ring and stud are mounted on the left rear of the receiver, Third Model dust cover rail integral to the receiver and dust cover with rear serrations. Mounted with a full forearm with iron end cap and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The right rear of the stock is stamped with the "NWMP" cartouche and "LOF 100" is stamped on the bottom. Includes a N.W.C.P. tunic/blazer patch with dark blue felt backing, a N.W.M.P. button, a N.W.C.P. hat badge, and two "D.C.Co." (Dominion Cartridge Co.) headstamped .45-75 cartridges. The included factory letter lists that this is a known N.W.M.P. carbine that was received at the warehouse on 27 March 1885 and shipped on 28 March 1885.

ConditionFine, retains 60% plus original blue finish on the barrel, traces of original blue on the receiver, and 50% original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance mostly a smooth grey patina. The wood is very good with numerous minor dings and scratches scattered throughout, a couple hairline cracks, and a moderate chip absent from the right of the forearm, all typical of extended frontier use. Mechanically excellent.
