The accompanying factory letter lists this exceptional, early production Winchester deluxe Model 1886 rifle with an octagon barrel in .45-90 caliber, set trigger and checkered pistol grip stock when received in the warehouse on April 27, 1887 and shipped the same day. The rifle is equipped with a dovetail blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "45-90 W.C.F." at the breech. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking and the serial number. The receiver is equipped with a special order single set trigger. The barrel, full length magazine and bolt are blued, the loading gate is niter blue, and the remaining surfaces are casehardened. The highly figured, XXX deluxe walnut forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point "H" style checkering (the checkering is a little "overcut" into the borders, but writer believes this to be a factory error). The buttstock features an ebony grip insert and solid crescent buttplate. The left side of the lower tang is marked "115 XXX." The assembly number "115" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Excellent. The barrel and magazine retain 95% plus original blue finish with thinning to brown on the balance. 90% original blue remains on the bolt. 85% original niter blue remains on the loading gate. The remaining surfaces retain 85% plus vivid original case colors. The wood is also excellent with minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering. The trigger does not set, otherwise action functions properly. Overall an attractive special order Winchester deluxe Model 1886 .45-90 rifle.
