Description:

The flat lock plate has a concealed wheel and classic Rococo scroll engraving and is signed "SEBASTIAN/SCHEIDTOGGER/IN SALZBURG" at the center. Sebastian Scheitogger of Salzburg, Austria, was active in 1720-1760 and is a noted maker of wheellocks. The rifled barrel has no visible markings and is equipped with a brass blade front sight and a dovetailed notch rear sight with decorative finial. The ebonized stock has extensive scrimshaw inlays with a variety of designs including classical figures and beasts, floral patterns, a scene of a stag pursued by two hounds and a hunter armed with a spear on the bottom at the breech, coordinating scene of the hunter and one of the dogs under a tree on the left flat, scalloped edges on the forend, large cheekpiece, and a wooden patch box with matching inlays and inlaid silver wire.

Rating Definition:

Very good with an original early 18th century lock with crisp engraving and markings along with gray and brown patina and some light pitting, light brown finish along with gray patina on the barrel, gray and brown patina on the finger groove trigger guard which has some flaws, and mild overall wear. The Victorian Period replacement stock is fine and has minor overall wear, mostly bright white inlays with contrasting black fill in the scrimshaw patterns, two inlays absent from the patch box lid, and mild scratches and dings.
