Scarce Factory Engraved Perry Patent Arms Co. Breech Loading Percussion Sporting Rifle

The Perry breech loaders were designed by Alonzo D. Perry who previously worked as a blacksmith in New York in the 1840s and also held other unrelated patents. The Perry Patent Arms Co. was formed in 1853 and failed around 1855. They manufactured a relatively small number of military carbines along with single shot pistols and custom ordered sporting rifles in varying calibers and configurations. All of their firearms are scarce. This rifle has classic scroll engraving on the action components and buttplate, a blade front sight, adjustable rear sight, a partial Remington barrel maker's mark on the left at the breech, German silver wedge escutcheons and pewter forend cap on the forend, the matching serial number on top at the breech and on the lever ("6" double stamped on the latter), "A.D. PERRY/PATENTED/1855" and "PERRY PATENT ARN Co [sic]/NEWARK N.J." on the breech block, and plain buttstock.

ConditionVery good. The barrel has aged to a dark plum brown overall and has some edge wear and light oxidation. The remaining metal has smooth gray and brown patina, crisp markings and engraving, and general mild wear. There is some staining on the barrel and action. The refinished wood is good and has mild wear, somewhat loose fitting buttstock, faint cracks at the edges of the wrist, and general mild wear. The primer tube is absent, but the rifle is mechanically fine.
