Approximately 2,970 Model 1853 Sporting Rifles were manufactured between 1854 and 1859 in a variety of configurations with small numbers in particular calibers, barrel lengths, finishes, etc. This rifle is fitted with period replacement dovetailed notch front and elevation adjustable notch rear sights, pewter forearm cap, brass patch box and buttplate, and marked with the Sharps address and patent markings. Matching serial numbers are on the barrel and upper tang.
