U.S. Marked Colt Third Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver with Desirable period Silver Decorated Grip

The Third Model Dragoon can be quickly distinguished by its round trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops, and was the most widely used of Colt's massive "horse pistols" that began with the famous Colt Walker. Around 10,500 Third Models were manufactured in 1851 to 1861. Many of these were used in the Old West and into the Civil War by men on both sides. Manufactured in 1853. Features a dovetailed blade front sight, empty rear dovetail for a notch rear sight, the New York barrel address, "JP" on the left side of the barrel lug, single letter inspection marks on various components, "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." on the left side of the frame, matching serial numbers (including the grip inlet), and a series of silver plaques with light engraving on the grip.

ConditionGood with a dark brown patina and mild pitting on the steel, deep aged patina on the brass, and moderate overall wear. The grip is good and has some loss at the corners, one absent plate, some small pieces of other silver plates absent, moderate handling wear, and some scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. Several Colt Dragoon revolvers are known to have been carried by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War, and this is definitely a distinctive piece that looks like it has seen considerable period use.
