Cased Nimschke Engraved, Gold Plated Presentation Smith & Wesson Number 1 1/2 2nd Issue Revolver with Pearl Grips Inscribed to Capt. J.A. Huntzinger

Manufactured from 1868 to 1875. The revolver has a wonderful L. D. Nimschke engraving consisting mostly of floral scrollwork on a punch dot background. Additional motifs include a fancy star burst on the underside of the frame and a fancy checkered diamond pattern behind the hammer. Amongst the scrollwork on the side plate is an engraved stars and stripes shield along with "HONOUR TO THE BRAVE" banner. The back strap inscription reads: "To Capt. J.A. Huntzinger/from his Company." The revolver is finished with gold over silver plating. Comes with a period presentation French fitted case containing a cleaning rod and cartridge block holding a full count of 39 rounds. According to the "Annual Report of the Adjutant General of Pennsylvania" for the year 1877, Captain Jacob Albert Huntzinger (1846-1881) served with Company G, 7th Regiment Infantry and resigned his commission on April 17, 1877. This presentation S&W would have made for a spectacular retirement gift. Soon after Huntzinger was involved in a banking scandal that ended with his imprisonment. He along with his father were convicted "for bing interested in helping to swindle the depositors of the Miners' Trust Company Bank, of Pottsville, out of their money" and for their indiscretions served time in the Berks county prison. He died young at the age of only 35. "At the expiration of his [two year prison] term," wrote the "The Lititz Record" ten days after his death on October 28, 1881, "[Jacob] Albert [Huntzinger] returned to his family in Philadelphia, very much prostrated in mind and body. He led a wretched existence until death had compassion on him and relieved him of his burden 'here below.'"

ConditionFine, retaining 70% original gold wash and 97% original silver plating. The engraving is crisp. The grips are excellent with some minor handling marks and attractive colors. Mechanically excellent. The case is fine showing minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the lining. A very interesting Nimschke presentation engraved S&W revolver that will bring added dimension to any S&W or antique collection. Provenance: Dr. Gerald Klaz collection.
