This early 19th century pistol has paktong mounts and is inscribed with "ROBT. OLIPHANT" on the side plate and the Clan Oliphant unicorn crest over "RO/No. 24" indicating issue to the Rossie Militia. The pistol is one of a larger group made for Robert Oliphant (1717-1785), 4th of Rossie Hill, for the militia. Oliphant was Postmaster General of Scotland, and his son James Stuart Oliphant was a militia officer. The smoothbore barrel has ordnance proofs on top. The rounded lock is signed "Maddock" and engraved with a single border line. The full paktong furniture has minimal floral engraving, and the full-length stock has raised apron carving around the barrel tang. The ramrod has a horn tip.

Very good with gray and brown patina on the barrel and lock along with mild pitting, worn proofs, crisp lock signature, aged patina and minor age related handling blemishes on the furniture along with crisp engraving details showing minor handling wear, and general mild overall wear. The stock is good and has a filled hole in the wrist for the trigger guard tang retaining pin, chipping at the nose of the lock, cracks in the forend at the tip, and general dings and scratches. Mechanically fine.
