Dating to the very early 19th century, with browned swamped twist octagonal sighted barrel engraved with band of stylized running foliage at the breech end and signed “H.W. MORTIMER. LONDON/GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY”. Foliate engraved standing breech incorporating the notch rear sight and flat bevelled lock signed “H.W. MORTIMER” with stepped tail engraved with a sunburst, and safety catch. Furniture including trigger guard with pineapple finial and engraved with a spray of foliage on the bow. Figured walnut full length stock with diamond pattern checkering and grooved pommel. Horn tipped ramrod with worm.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel, standing breech, and lock have an applied dark mottled browned finish. Trigger guard is a grey color with minor surface corrosion marking. The engraving is clear. Barrel signature softened. Stock is very good with well-defined checkering, a small repaired setting crack to the left of the standing breech, and a small repair to the left of the rear ramrod pipe. The cock will drop from half-cock, but it is otherwise mechanically fine.

B) Mortimer Flintlock Officer's Pistol

Manufacturer: Mortimer & Son
Model: Flintlock
Type: Pistol
Gauge: 16 gauge
Barrel: 8 inch
Finish: brown/casehardened/blue
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 1974
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 180
Class: Antique
Description:

See “A”. The pair contained in a fitted mahogany case, probably original, lined in green baize with a brass mounted copper powder flask embossed with a shell motif and an iron pincer type ball mold. The exterior of the case lid with large circular brass escutcheon engraved “GEORGE BLACKMAN/1815”, the left side of the case with brass carrying handle. While not documented, the inscription may be for Sir George Blackman Harnage, 1st Baronet, (1767-1836) born George Blackman and assumed the surname Harnage after marrying his cousin on his mother's side in 1821 in order to inherit her family's ancestral home. That same year, he became a baronet. He a captain in the Royal Navy and was also the director of the Bank of England during most of 1810-1820. The set may have also been owned by his eldest son George (1792–1866) who was a Royal Navy commander and became 2nd Baronet.Other members of the family also served in the British military, including one of his brothers who was killed at Waterloo while captain in the Coldstream Guards.

Rating Definition:

Fine with a dark brown mottled finish applied and a slightly softened barrel signature. Traces of finish and otherwise gray patina with some minor surface corrosion on the pipes and trigger guard. The stock has a small setting crack to the left side of the rear ramrod pipe and between the sidenail and the standing breech but is otherwise fine with crisp checkering and minor wear.. The case is good with some age related external storage marks, removed upper lock components, and small chips at the edges. The lining has some age fading and is worn through where the front sights rub. The central powder flask block is becoming loose. The odd position of the carrying handle indicates this case was meant for use with a leather outer. The flask is dented but the accessories are fine. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
