Description:

These unusual pistols were made by Charles Grierson in the early 19th century using earlier barrels by the famed London gunmakers Griffin & Tow. With swamped browned damascus round barrel with full length sighting flat signed “GRIFFIN & TOW LONDON”, fitted with a small crescent shaped front sight, notch rear sight, platinum lined touch hole, engraved with a band of beadwork at the breech end and struck with London proof marks and maker’s mark “IG” of Joseph Griffin. Standing breech engraved with a band of stylized foliage, border lines and further foliage with a Britannia shield. Engraved flat bevelled lock detented lock signed “GRIERSON LONDON” and with stepped tail and raised priming pan. Furniture including blued trigger guard with pineapple finial and bow engraved with a spray of foliage with a further Britannia shield. Well figured walnut full length stock with rounded checkered butt, the wrist with rectangular blank silver initial escutcheon. Horn tipped ramrod with worm.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retaining much of an older rebrowned finish mixed with gray and brown patina, signature slightly softened, clear engraved band at the breech end, and mild pitting at the breech. The standing breech and lock in crisp condition with sharp engraving, the casehardened finish faded to a dark grey patina. The tip of the frizzen steel chipped. Trigger guard and ramrod pipes retaining 90% blue finish. Stock with minor age related handling blemishes. Mechanically fine.

Description:

See “A”. In fitted mahogany case lined in green baize, with some accessories, including large brass mounted copper three way powder flask with decorative bands of beadwork, iron pincer type ball mold, and turnscrews. The exterior of the lid with large circular brass escutcheon with flush fitting carrying handle.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retaining much of an older rebrowned finish blended with gray and brown patina, mostly distinct barrel signature with softened "&," minor pitting at the vent, and clear engraved band at the breech. The standing breech and lock retaining traces of fading original case colors and crisp engraving and displaying dark grey patina. Trigger guard and ramrod pipes retaining 90% blue finish. Stock with minor age related handling blemished. Mechanically fine. Case is good with some age related wear to the external corners, older partial relining, some damage to lid lining, and some age related faded and staining to baize.
