Description:

This massive gun weighs in at 19 lbs. 9.2 oz. The barrel has sixteen-groove rifling, a silver blade front sight, notch rear sight, and "LONDON" inscribed on top. The rounded lock has "W. TURVEY" signed at center and border and scroll engraving. The brass furniture also has some border and scroll engraving, and the trigger guard has an "acorn" finial. It has double set triggers (set trigger is very small). The robust stock has a checkered wrist and wire inlaid scroll patterns around the tang. William Turvey apprenticed to George Turvey in 1742 and was free of the Gunmakers Co. in 1750.

Rating Definition:

Fine with most of an older light brown finish remaining on the barrel along with some twist patterns, silver-gray patina and some minor pitting on the lock, aged patina on the brass furniture, generally crisp markings and engraving, and mild overall wear. The stock is good and some chipping, cracks in the butt, small slivers of inlay absent, and crisp checkering. The adjustment screw for the set triggers is absent, but it is mechanically fine. Definitely a very impressive large-bore rifle. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
