Fine Engraved Documented Pair of John Dickson & Son 25 Bore Single Barrel Percussion Pistols with Original Case and Accessories Made for the Famed Scottish Eccentric Charles Gordon

A) Dickson Percussion Pistol

The maker’s record list these percussion pistols as being completed for Charles Gordon on April 17, 1897. This pair is also listed by serial number in Donald Dallas' "Charles Gordon: Magnificent madness" on page 35. With browned octagonal barrel signed “JOHN DICKSON & SON, 63 PRINCES STREET EDINBURGH” and numbered “1” on the top flat, with bead front sight and blued standing rear sight with platinum inlaid center line. Casehardened patent breech inlaid with two platinum lines and with platinum plug engraved with a rosette. Casehardened standing breech numbered “1”. Casehardened detented back action lock signed “JOHN DICKSON & SON” on a ribbon and with blued safety catch in front of the hammer. Furniture comprising blued trigger guard and casehardened butt cap, trigger plate, ramrod pipes and barrel key escutcheons. Finely engraved with scrollwork throughout. Well-figured walnut full-length stock with checkered butt. Original brass mounted wooden ramrod. The underside of the barrel with London proof marks.

ConditionIn near “as new” condition. Barrel retaining near 99% original dark browned finish, signature crisp. Breech, standing breech, lock, trigger plate, butt cap and ramrod pipes each retaining near 98% original casehardened finish. Trigger guard with 90% plus original blued finish, some flaking on tang. Engraving crisp throughout. Stock with straight figuring, crisp checkering to the butt, and scattered occasional handling marks, with a localized patch of handling marks to right side forearm tip caused by additional ramrod fitted beneath the pistol in the case. Mechanically excellent.

B) Dickson Percussion Pistol

As with “A”. The barrel and standing breech numbered “2”. In original brass cornered oak close fitted case lined in tooled pigskin, the lid with brown leather John Dickson & Son trade label with gilt lettering. With accessories including two William Davis “IMPROVED No.25” ball molds, two extra ramrods each with worm, two turned treen pots, two Hawksley powder flasks, and a Hawksley oiler. With leather outer named to “Charles Gordon Esq”.

ConditionAs with “A”. Case in excellent condition, some age related rubbing to some of the pig skin lining. Accessories excellent. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
