Elaborately Engraved, Silver and Gold Inlaid, and Relief Carved Percussion Double Barrel Shotgun Marked Carl Stiegel of Munich

This rifle was sold by Carl Anton Stiegel's firm in Munich in the mid-19th century. Their firearms are believed to have been the work of Suhl and Zella-Mehlis gunmakers and various artisans. Some of the incredible Stiegel firearms were owned by international dignitaries, such as the incredible drilling recorded as the favorite gun of Emperor Meiji of Japan sold by our firm in June 2020. This side by side double barrel percussion shotgun has beautiful pattern welded/damascus barrels with silver scrollwork on the breech sections, a bead front sight on the flat rib which is signed "Carl Stiegel in Munchen" in gold surrounded by additional silver scrolls, various appropriate game and hunting scenes with a high degree of detail on the breech, upper tang, lock plates and hammers with gold inlaid animals and foliage and additional silver scroll patterns; scroll pattern contrasting trigger guard, smooth gutta percha buttplate, black heel inlay, dog head carving on the forend tip with inset glass eyes, relief carved scroll patterns, a highly detailed raised relief carved scene of a dog capturing an enormous bird on the left side of the butt surrounded by scroll patterns, nicely sculpted cheek piece, and sling swivels on the rear ramrod pipe and butt.

ConditionFine with distinct damascus patterns, mostly bright original inlays showing some slight aging, crisp engraving details, dark finish/patina along most of the barrels, traces of original case colors on the locks, dark patina on the balance, mostly crisp carving, attractive mineral lines, slight chip on the trigger guard, and general mild overall wear including some dings and scratches on the otherwise fine wood. Mechanically fine.
