Very Fine Engraved Pair of Parker Field & Sons Double Barrel Percussion Officer's or Howdah Pistols with Case

A) Parker Field & Sons Pistol

Manufactured in circa 1850 by the highly respected London gunmakers Parker Field & Sons. With browned damascus octagonal barrels each engraved with stylized running foliage on the face of the muzzle and with a narrow band of fine stylized running foliage at the muzzle and breech end. Concave rib with bead front sight and signed “PARKER FIELD & SONS. 233 HOLBORN. LONDON”. Casehardened patent breeches each with pierced platinum plug and engraved with scrollwork on the rib section. Casehardened scroll engraved grooved standing breech and bar-in-wood side locks, the latter each with sliding safety catch behind the hammer and signed “PARKER FIELD & SONS”. Furniture including casehardened trigger plate with pineapple finial, blued trigger guard and a pommel cap with hinged trap cover, each finely engraved with scrollwork. Figured walnut three quarter length stock with checkered butt, the wrist with blank rectangular silver initial escutcheon and the forearm with silver barrel key escutcheons. With captive iron ramrod with engraved stirrup. London proof marks.

ConditionVery fine. The barrels retain near 100% rebrowned finish, bright muzzles with minor discoloration and clear engraving, rib signature crisp. Breeches retain 80% renewed casehardened finish with clear engraving. The standing breech, locks and furniture all have clear engraving, the standing breech, locks and trigger plate retaining 40% original casehardened finish, stronger in sheltered areas, and the trigger guard 30% original blued finish to the inner surface. The stock is fine and has mostly minor scattered age related storage and handling marks throughout, and well-defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.

B) Parker Field & Sons Pistol

See “A”. In refitted mahogany case lined with dark blue velvet, the lid with green printed Reilly of Oxford Street trade label, and with reproduction powder flask.

ConditionVery fine. The barrels retain nearly all of the rebrowned finish and have a distinct signature and engraving. 30% faded original casehardened finish is on the standing breech, locks and trigger plate. The stock is fine and has well-defined checkering, mostly minor storage and handling wear, and two patches of deeper marking, one behind the right hammer and the other in front of the left lock. The case is very good and has external age related storage and handling marks, and the interior lining is good. The trade label is holed and has some rubbed areas. Mechanically excellent.
