Description:

This early percussion shotgun has a lock and breech arrangement similar to a single barrel sporting gun (sn 10.112 from c. 1828) shown as figure 99 in "The Mantons: Gunmakers" by Neal and Back and is also similar to some of Mantons earlier pellet and paper patch ignition guns. The locks are signed "JOSEPH MANTON/LONDON" and have engraved scrolling serpents and removable strikers. Coordinating serpents are engraved on the trigger guard bow and heel of the buttplate. The breech end of the rib, the upper tang, and other areas have scroll engraving. The barrels have "JOSEPH. MANTON" marked on the rib, London proofs, and no serial number. The breeches have platinum plugs. The stock has German silver escutcheons, a smooth forend, checkered wrist, and a 14 inch length of pull. The case has the Fleming crest over their motto "LET THE DEED SHEW" on a belt and the initials "R.S.F." on the lid escutcheon, a Manton trade label, punch, two cap tins, a leather shot flask, and a brass powder flask.

Rating Definition:

Very good with some removed markings on the rib ahead of the Manton marking, some applied brown, faint cracks in the rib, distinct twist patterns, a blend of patina and faded brown finish on the balance of the barrels, traces of original case colors on the locks, repaired trigger guard 70% blue finish on the trigger guard and buttplate, spots of mild oxidation/pitting, crisp engraving, and mild overall wear. The refinished stock is also very good and has a chip above the wedge on the right and dented escutcheon below, smaller flakes on some of the edges, crisp checkering, faint crack in the buttstock, and mild marks and scratches. Mechanically fine. The case is good and has a repaired crack along the back of the lid, some detached dividers, and moderate age and storage related wear. The accessories are good with heavy striking wear on the patch cutter and mild age and storage wear on the flasks. This is definitely an attractive early Joseph Manton double barrel sporting gun.
