Manufactured in 1935, an included conditional sales contract shows that this pistol was sold on May 1, 1937 by the Imperial Valley Hardware Company of El Centro, California to a Pierce L. Hussey of Yuma, Arizona. While Colt factory records often provide near zero detail on the final recipients of their products, this contract has a number of details about Hussey, chiefly that he was with the United States Reclamation Service and involved with the construction of the Imperial Dam. Formerly a part of the U.S. Geological Survey, the USRS (today the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation) was and is a major supplier of water resources and hydroelectric power to the western United States. The Imperial Diversion Dam sits on the California/Arizona border, not far from both El Centro and Yuma, which catches the waters of the Colorado River for the Imperial Reservoir. Hussey's role on the project is unknown, and it is not recorded if the pistol has a professional use or was a personal sporting or defensive weapon. Blade front and square notch rear sights, two-line address and patent marking on left side of slide, maker, caliber, and Rampant Colt marking on the right, short milled trigger, checkered slide catch, magazine release, thumb safety, and wide spur hammer, arched checkered mainspring housing, two-tone magazine and a "COLT SUPER 38 AUTO" marked barrel. Included with the pistol is a matching numbered Colt "black box", 38 Colt Auto hanging tag, "Shooting Suggestions" pamphlet, and one-page instruction sheet.
