Description:

This M1C Sniper rifle was manufactured by Springfield Armory (SA) during the Korean Conflict. This rifle was built to M1C Sniper configuration by Springfield Armory (SA) during the Korean War using a SA M1C receiver drilled and tapped by Griffin & Howe during in 1945 but not assembled into a complete rifle until the Korean Conflict. The rifle has the scarce "SA/J.L.G." final inspection mark used on new production M1 rifles manufactured by SA c. 1950-1953. The left side of the Griffin & Howe receiver bracket is stamped with the rifle serial number "355/4828" using the SA style numerals with distinctive, round top "3". The bracket mount screws are staked on the inside of the receiver and have not been re-staked. The right side of the Griffin & Howe blued scope mount is stamped with the serial number "3639437" with SA round top "3". The mount is fitted with a blued M81 Telescopic Sight with fine wire cross-hairs, sliding sunshade and rubber eyepiece. The rifle has the late, T37 Flash Hider and russet leather cheek-piece. The rifle heel is stamped with the standard SA markings above the serial number "3554828". The rifle has the mixed WWII and post-war components including 'Type 3" rear sights, "SA/J-1-*" bolt, "D35382 SA" operating rod with relief cut, "SA 5 53" dated barrel, "-12 SA" trigger housing with milled trigger guard and late gas cylinder plug. The upper barrel band is secured by a roll-pin. The face of the barrel chamber is bright. The left side of the stock is stamped with the boxed, "SA/J.L.G." final inspection stamp followed by the Ordnance Corps escutcheon. A single, encircled, serif, "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside face of the pistol grip. The right side of the cheek piece is stamped "MRT/8-51". The left side of the M81 Telescopic Sight tube is roll-stamped: "TELESCOPE M81/SERIAL NO. 33959/STOCK NO. 84373" in three lines. Drawing numbers are stamped on the left side of the scope tube, sides of the elevation and windage knob blocks and sides of the scope caps. The rubber eyepiece is embossed with the drawing number "7575053". Nearly all of the M1C rifles released by the Civilian Marksmanship Program were WWII production M1C rifles overhauled by SA Armory during the Korean War. M1C sniper rifles assembled by SA during Korean War using excess 1945 receivers are very rare.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. This rifle has all the correct M1C components and remains in the same configuration as built by SA in 1953. The receiver, barrel and other components retain 95% plus of the SA black-green parkerized finish. All of the markings are extremely crisp. The scarce M81 Telescopic Sight is excellent with perfect optics and 90% of the high polish blue finish. The scope mount has 98% of the original blue finish. The stock and hand guards are all in excellent condition with raised, feathered grain, exceptional final inspection and proof marks. The cheek piece is in the same excellent condition with medium brown russet leather. This is an exceptional example of a rare Korean War, SA built, M1C sniper rifle with matching number receiver bracket and very scarce M81 Telescopic sight.
