Description:

These extremely rare combination guns were made by W. & C. Scott & Son of Birmingham and it is believed that perhaps as few as half a dozen were made for Rodda with the serial number indicating manufacture in 1894. The hammer on the right lock plate has a pivoting bar with a checkered tip that can be operated by the thumb of the shooter to engage the firing pin for the rifle barrel without discharging the right hand shotgun barrel. With blued barrels formed as side-by-side shotgun barrels with the rifle barrel above and engraved with a band of stylized foliage and scrollwork at the breech ends. The upper rifle barrel signed “R.B. RODDA & CO. “MULTUM IN UNO” LONDON & 7 & 8 DALHOUSIE SQUARE CALCUTTA” towards the breech and with block mounted rear sight of three folding leaves each with platinum inlaid center line and graduated from “100” to “300” yards, and block mounted bead front sight. The underside of the shotgun barrels and the left side of the rifle barrel are struck with London black powder proof marks. Border and scroll engraved action with carved percussion fences, back action locks each with sculpted hammer and signed “R.B. RODDA & CO.” within a ribbon, and serial numbered trigger guard. Figured 14 ½ inch straight hand walnut stock with checkered grip and forearm, the latter with Scott release catch, and a blank silver initial oval beneath the grooved butt. Shotgun barrels proved at 13/1 (.719), right barrel measuring .728, left barrel measuring .727, minimum wall thickness in each is 0.026. Weight 8 lbs. 10.4 oz. In fitted leather case lined in green baize, the lid with printed R.B. Rodda & Co. trade label.

Rating Definition:

Barrels retaining 99% professionally reblued finish, signature and breech engraving softened. Action, locks and trigger guard cleaned bright with a light grey patina, engraving remains clear to the action and locks, softened on the trigger guard. Stock has been refinished and the checkering recut at the grip. The butt has a thin wooden plate cut with grooves, apparently a working alteration. Mechanically excellent. The case is in good condition with age related staining and marks. It has been relined and refitted for this gun and the external straps have been replaced. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
