Description:

Per the information on page 116 of the book "The Springfield 1903 Rifle" by LTC William Brophy, this was one of 40 barreled actions submitted to Springfield for testing as Model 1924 International Match Bolt Action Rifles. In contrast to earlier International Match guns, which were fully in-house production by Springfield, for the 1924 IM the Arsenal solicited barrels from outside firms, namely Winchester, Remington, and Pope. To equip the 5-man match team, all the actions were bench tested, and the top 15 hand-picked for assembly into single shot rifles. This rifle was #28 on the list, and would be assembled with a fine target stock and a conventional magazine, bolt and trigger. Griffin & Howe globe front sight and a 150 meter Lyman receiver peep sight, with a pair of scope mounting blocks on the heavyweight Remington barrel and the standard nomenclature on the receiver. The bolt is hand-numbered to match the receiver. The stock is constructed from fine hardwood, with grasping grooves on the target-style forearm, brown leather sling, checkered pistol grip with ebony cap, and a checkered steel buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, with 75% plus original blue finish, showing a mixed brown and gray patina on the barrel, mild edge wear, light handling marks, and a small amount of spotting. The bolt handle has been turned down, a corresponding notch cut into the right rear receiver tang, and the body and cocking piece show minor pitting. The stock is good with some scuffing and dents. Mechanically excellent.
