Description:

The portrait measures approximately 12 by 19 1/2 inches in a 19 1/2 by 27 inch frame and is marked with "-Sioux Chief Spotted Eagle - Wamalagalisca- No. 1879.-" along with the "L.A. Huffman - Miles City - Mont." copyright line. "Robert Conway/Miles City Saddlery Print" and "Writing on back not recorded before reframing" are written on the frame backing. Spotted Eagle was also known as Two Eagles and was one of the Itazipcola or Sans Arc (Lakota) leaders at the famous Battle of Little Bighorn. Laton Alton Huffman (1854-1931) also took other photographs of Spotted Eagle and his village in the late 19th century. Huffman spent much of later years enlarging and hand-coloring his earlier photographs.

Rating Definition:

Very fine with minor wear on the frame and otherwise minimal age and storage related wear overall. This would display great with the colorized print of Spotted Eagle's camp by Huffman in the sale and make an excellent addition to any western or Native American artifact collection. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
