Manufactured in 1879 as a second model with a dust cover guide rail attached to the receiver with two screws. The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a 32 inch heavy octagon barrel, set trigger, checkered stock and casehardened stock when received in the warehouse on April 24, 1879 and shipped on May 13. The letter also states that on November 16, 1886 the rifle was changed to an octagon barrel in .40-60 caliber and plain trigger. This is likely a factory error as the rifle retains an octagon barrel in 45-75 caliber and set trigger. At 31 3/4 inches the barrel measures just shy of the factory listed 32 inches. The rifle is equipped with a combination Beach front sight, an "1876" marked folding ladder rear sight, and a folding tang peep sight graduated from 0 to 50 on the left side. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line address/patent dates marking. The rifle lacks caliber designations. The lower tang has the serial number. The nicely figure, XX deluxe walnut forearm and straight grip stock feature multi-point checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a trapdoor crescent buttplate. Comes with a five piece cleaning rod. The left side of the lower tang is marked "XX 340." The assembly number "340" is repeated on the stock inlet and buttplate.

Very good, retaining strong amounts of original blue in the protected areas with the balance a smooth brown patina. There is a small dent on the underside of the magazine tube. Some visible patterns of case colors remain on the receiver, hammer and lever. Traces of original niter blue remains on the loading gate. There is some pitting mostly on the receiver. The wood is very good with a crack on the wrist (left side), otherwise minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
