Description:

The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a round barrel in .33 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, Lyman receiver and leaf sights, half magazine, hard rubber shotgun buttplate and takedown configuration when received in the warehouse on September 10, 1904 and shipped on September 14, with no mention of engraving. The letter also lists two repair and return dates (June 23, 1911 and November 19, 1913). It was likely during one of these returns to the factory that rifle was engraved, as the engraving is certainly factory. The engraving on the receiver is very similar to the factory no. 9 with floral scrollwork on a punch dot background, zig-zag line and dot borders and circular panel scenes depicting stags. Flourishes of scrollwork extend to the forend cap and barrel at the breech. As advertised in Winchester's "Highly Finished Arms" catalog, the no. 9 was "a very popular style of finish" that would have set a customer back $10.00 circa 1897. The rifle is fitted with a Lyman beaded blade front sight, a King filler block in the rear sight dovetail and a Lyman receiver sight. The top of the barrel is stamped with the two-line address ahead of the rear sight and "33 WCF" at the breech. The left side of the barrel has the two-line nickel steel marking. A Winchester factory oval proof is stamped on the barrel and receiver. "MODEL 1886" is stamped on the upper tang. The lower tang has the two-line patent dates marking along with the serial number. The buttstock is fitted with a hard rubber Winchester grip cap and shotgun buttplate. The forearm and pistol grip stock are highly figured XXX deluxe walnut and feature "H" style checkering. The left side of the lower tang has been factory remarked "XXX 380 RF." The stock inlet as the assembly number "380" along with the number "52673."

Rating Definition:

Exceptionally fine as subsequently factory engraved. The barrel and magazine tube retain 80% factory refurbished blue finish. The receiver, bolt and forend cap retain 95% blue finish with the balance thinning to a brown. The takedown collar is a mix of blue finish and smooth brown-gray patina. The engraving is crisp. Slight traces of niter blue remain on the loading gate. 70% case colors remain on the hammer and lever. The refinished wood is very fine with minor handling marks, a small chip at the buttplate toe, crisp checkering overall and most of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent. An impressive work of early 20th century Winchester artistry.
