This is a really interesting small bore Model 1885 with a variety of special order features. The accompany factory letter states the rifle was originally manufactured with a 26 inch, no. 1 octagon barrel in .32 RF, single set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock and takedown configuration when it was received in the warehouse on June 10, 1910, and shipped the next day. The rifle was quickly returned to the factory on September 1, 1910 for several factory modifications, received in the warehouse on December 14, 1910 and shipped the next day in the following configuration: 28 inch, no. 1 octagon barrel in .25-20 caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, takedown, Lyman combination front sight, Lyman leaf sight, and Lyman combination rear sight with cup disc no. 2. With the exception of the dovetail blade front sight and elevation adjustable rear sight, the rifle is in the configuration listed in the factory letter when it shipped on December 15, 1910. The 28 inch, no. 1 octagon barrel is marked with the two-line address/patent dates marking ahead of the rear sight on the top flat and "25-20 S.S." at the breech on the upper left flat. The top of the barrel and receiver are stamped with a Winchester factory oval proof. The lower tang has the serial number. The checkered forearm and pistol grip stock are "X" deluxe walnut. The initials "RHM" are engraved on the stock grip cap. The buttstock is fitted with a casehardened crescent buttplate. The left side of lower tang is marked "9392 X" followed by a scratched out assembly number followed by "X." The assembly number "9392" is repeated on the buttstock under the buttplate and on the buttplate.
