Scarce Revolutionary War Era U.S. Marked French Tulle Arsenal Model 1733 Flintlock Horseman's Pistol

The notes included by the consignor note it as a Pennsylvania Committee of Safety Cavalry Pistol or Horseman's Pistol and points to gun P-72 on page 48 of "Weapons of the American Revolution" by Warren Moore. That pistol s listed as a "French model 1733 dragoon pistol made at St. Etienne. . ." A similar pistol is also pictured as item P.31 "French Cavalry Pistol" and also identified as a Model 1733 in "The History of Weapons of the American Revolution" by George Neumann. Model 1733 pistols would have been used in the French & Indian Wars by the French, so some of these early pistols may have been captured during that conflict and part of colonial arms stores at the outbreak of the Revolution. The French also supplied thousands of firearms and firearms parts for use by the Continental Army and the American militias during the Revolution. The lock has a "TVLLE" marking in the center and a coarse "US" marking on the tail. The latter markings are among the styles used by the new U.S. government to mark arms during and following the American Revolution. The smoothbore barrel transitions from octagon to round and is pin fastened. The furniture is all iron. The stock has an iron forend band, defined tear drop flats, and a raised tear drop around the barrel tang.

ConditionGood with mottled gray patina and mild pitting on the shortened barrel and the furniture, dark brown patina and oxidation on the reconverted lock, spliced forend tip, small chips and flakes around the mortises concentrated at the nose of the lock, and general mild scratches and dings. The lock functions but hangs up.
