This Model 1879 "Trapdoor" Springfield Cavalry carbine with Model 1879 Buckhorn rear sight. The carbine features a short wrist stock with a butt trap for a three-piece, jointed, cleaning rod. The carbine has a blued barrel, trigger guard, hammer, lock plate and butt plate. The low-arch breech block and barrel tang have a water-quenched casehardened finish. The left side of the barrel is stamped "V/P/Eagle Head/P" just in front of the receiver and "R" on top of the barrel between the receiver and the rear sight. The top of the breech block is marked "US/MODEL/1873" in three lines. The lock plate has the Eagle/Shield motif just ahead of the hammer followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873" in three lines. A script "SWP/1882" inspector's cartouche in a rectangular box is stamped on the stock wrist behind the sling bar. There is an encircled script "P" proof mark stamped just behind the trigger guard finial "MASS" is marked on top of receiver. A unit marking "20/A/190" is stamped on the comb of the stock just above the butt plate.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The carbine has 30% of the blue finish. The balance has faded to a dark patina. 30% of the case colors are visible on the breech block and tang. Markings on the barrel, lock and breech block are sharp. The stock has been lightly sanded but remains in fine condition. The proof and inspection marks are legible. This is a solid representative example of a Indian War Trapdoor carbine in superior condition!
