Description:

This Uniformed Rank Knights of Pythias sword by M.C. Lilley & Co. has a 28 inch blade with etching backed with gold including the inscription "Major G.F. Day, M.D. Surgeon/2nd Regt. U.R.K.P. Martinsburg, W. Va." on the obverse and the maker's mark on the ricasso of the reverse. The gilt brass hilt has "MD/UR" on the languet, floral patterns, a brass wire and leather wrapped grip, and "FC/B" in a escutcheon on the pommel (Friendship, Charity, Benevolence, the order's motto). The silver-gilt scabbard has gilded floral fittings and includes the Staff of Hermes on the upper band. Dr. George F. Day was a surgeon from West Virginia in the late 19th century and early 20th century who also lived in Washington, D.C., and was a Grand Lecturer and Grand Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias. Provenance: The Dr. Robert Azar Collection

Rating Definition:

Very fine with an excellent original bright blade, nearly all of the gilt finish remaining, crisp etching and designs, light aged patina and minor flaking on the silver of the scabbard, some flaking of the leather and loosening of the wire on the grip, and generally only minor age and storage related wear overall.
