Description:

This early sword from c. 1795-1800 is very similar to the example pictured on the left on page 61 of the "The American Eagle Pommel Sword: The Early Years - 1794-1830" by Mowbray. The sword has a 25 1/4 inch blade with false edge, double fullers, and no markings. The gilt brass hilt has an "FT" marked mark on the left above the blade, the distinctive Thurkle eagle pommel, and a "reeded" bone grip. The rare original leather scabbard has brass mounts with scalloped edges. Francis Thurkle was a master of the Cutlers' Company in London and part of a line of cutlers.

Rating Definition:

Very good with mottled gray patina, light pitting, and general mild wear on the blade; more than half of the polished original gilt finish visible on the hilt, aged patina on the balance, thin age cracks in the grip, and mild overall wear. The scabbard is about good and has professionally replaced upper and mid mounts, mild crackling, and minor flaking. Overall, a very attractive and early imported American naval officer's sword.
