Description:

Approximately 30,000 were manufactured by the American Machine Works in Massachusetts from 1861 to 1865. Some of these carbines were issued to the 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, who served as part of George Armstrong Custer's 3rd Division and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Moorefield in 1864. This carbine is in very fine condition with standard markings and features including "JH" cartouche on the left of the stock.

Rating Definition:

Fine, retains 50% blue finish and some 30% plus of the original case colors with grinding marks visible on top rear, the balance a mottled grey/brown patina with some scattered patches of mild cleaning evidence. The wood is very good with minor dings and scratches consistent with use throughout, a couple small holes near the lower tang (also missing screw), a scattered speckling of light colored paint on the buttstock, and a clear cartouche. Mechanically excellent.
