Exceptional U.S. Martially Marked Civil War Starr Arms Co. Model 1863 Single Action Percussion Revolver

Single Action Model 1863 percussion revolver manufactured by the Starr Arms Co. of New York, New York, as part of a 25,000 gun contract with the Ordnance Department during the Civil War. The revolver has a high polish blue finish on the round barrel and six-shot cylinder and a military blue finish on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The loading lever and hammer are color casehardened. The one-piece grip is oil finished walnut. "STARR PATENT JAN. 15, 1856" is roll stamped on the right side of the frame and "'STARR. ARMS. Co. NEW. YORK." is roll-stamped on the left side. The serial number "38943" is visible on the front of the frame below the loading lever, inside of the hammer well, on the side of the cylinder, on the left inside grip straps, and on the hidden top surface of the one piece walnut grip. All of the visible serial numbers match. Single, block letter "M" and "C" Ordnance sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. Boxed script "GFM" (George F. Morrison) cartouche on the left side grip panel, "JTB" (James T. Baden) on the right side grip panel. Although the Starr Single Action revolvers were delivered to the Ordnance Department throughout 1864, the revolvers were issued in limited numbers during the Civil War.

ConditionExceptionally fine, retaining 85% plus bright original high polish blue finish with some light flaking, scratches, and scattered light freckling on the frame, and loss on the back strap. 90% of the bright case colors remain on the loading lever and hammer with some patches of light freckling. Grip is fine with some small chips on the lower left, a scrape on the right panel with a faint cartouche, and a crisp cartouche on the left panel. An attractive example of an important Civil War revolver.
