Description:

There were only approximately 60 Wiard rifles manufactured in 1861-1862 at O'Donnell's Foundry in New York City from cast "semi-steel." These are split between various calibers. Of these, around 24 of the 6-Pounders are known to survive, mainly at battlefields and historic sites. Relatively little is known about these scarce artillery pieces in actual combat, but the 6-pounders had an incredibly effective range of up to 7,000 yards and some are reported to have been used by Major General Daniel Sickles' "Excelsior Brigade." There were Wiards at the Battle of Stones River and Shiloh, in Burrow's Battery, 14th Ohio Light Artillery, and in Bartlett's Battery G, 1st Ohio Light Artillery. Burrow's Battery in particular included four of the 6-pounder and two 12-pounders. It has a globe type front sight, "1861" and "NW/NYC/OF" (Norman Wiard, New York City, O'Donnell's Foundry) marked trunnions, "No. 39" on top of the right trunnion, Wiard logo over "US" and "WIARD" on top, and a Paulson Bros. Ordnance Corp carriage.

Rating Definition:

Very good with a coat of black paint over mild pitting, generally legible markings, and mild overall wear.
