Description:

Manufactured in the mid-1870s, making this late for percussion ignition. This gun has browned twist barrels with a concave rib with bead front sight, signed “W. & C. SCOTT & SON. 7 DORSET PLACE, PALL MALL EAST, LONDON. BEST LAMINATED STEEL” and with a small spray of scrollwork engraved at the breech end. Casehardened patent breeches each engraved with a fine band of stylized running foliage and with pierced platinum plug, the rib section inlaid with two gold lines and engraved with scrollwork. Scroll engraved standing breech, sidelocks each signed “W. & C. SCOTT & SON” and with antediluvian hammer with screw retained detachable nose. The standing breech flanked by silver plates engraved with further scrollwork en suite. Furniture including casehardened trigger plate, blued trigger guard and buttplate, all engraved en suite. The underside of the barrels with Birmingham black powder proof marks. Highly figured 14 1/4 inch straight hand stock with checkered grip and forearm, the wrist inset with a gold shield shaped initial escutcheon engraved with a monogram. German silver mounted wooden ramrod with worm. In brass cornered fitted mahogany case lined in green baize. With accessories including a Gibson’s patent combination mainspring clamp/percussion pillar wrench/turnscrew, an embossed leather shot flask and a brass Sykes patent shot charger. Rating Definition:

Very fine as refinished. Barrels retaining 99% rebrowned finish with attractive Damascus pattern, some scattered minor marks visible beneath the finish, signature softened but legible. Breeches with clear engraving and slight faded traces of original casehardened finish. Standing breech and locks bright with clear engraving, clear engraving to the silver plates. Trigger guard and buttplate retaining 95% reblued finish, engraving clear. Stock varnished with some scattered minor age related storage and handling marks and small crack/chip forming at the tail of the right lock. Checkering is well defined. Mechanically excellent. Case in very good condition with scattered external age related storage and handling marks. Lining generally in very good condition, some age related rubbing from the gun and accessories. Accessories generally in good condition, some corrosion marking to the very rare Gibson patent combination clamp.
