Engraved Charles Lancaster 16 Bore Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun

The maker’s records note that this shotgun was completed in circa 1829/30 apparently for a Mr. Jervoice (name not clear in the records). It is noted as being of 16 bore with 2ft. 6in. (30 inch) barrels and regulated with 2 1/2 drams of powder and 1 3/8 oz. of shot. The barrels now measure 28 7/8 inches including the breech plugs. The rib has a bead front sight and is signed "- -> -> CHARLES LANCASTER No 151 NEW BOND ST. LONDON <- <- -." The breech plugs have platinum bands and plugs. The locks are signed "C. LANCASTER,/LONDON." The locks and furniture are engraved with a mix of scrolls, border designs, bird and dog scenes, and shell patterns, and the trigger plate finial is a pineapple design. The lower tang and the bottom of the barrel and breech plugs have the matching serial number, and the barrels also have London proofs flanking "CL" maker's marks. The wedge escutcheons and wrist escutcheon are silver. The stock has a smooth forend and a checkered wrist. Measurements: 1 7/16 inch drop at comb; 1 9/16 inch drop at heel; 14 ¼ inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 11 oz. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

ConditionFine overall as refinished. The barrels retain 75% plus refinished brown and have distinct twist patterns. The rib marking is softened but legible. The locks and breeches have traces of original case colors. Strong original blue finish remains on the heel and tang of the buttplate and on the trigger guard bow. The remaining surfaces display a mix of gray and brown patina. The engraving is generally crisp throughout, but some areas are softened. The stock has a very minor chip at the edge of the forend on the right, crisp checkering, minor handing and storage wear, smooth refreshed oiled finish, and attractive figure and grain. Mechanically fine. Overall, this is a very attractive and early Lancaster shotgun.
