Description:

Manufactured in circa 1876, with browned Damascus barrels each engraved with a narrow band of stylized running foliage at the breech end. Raised flat file cut matted rib fitted with a bead front sight, blued scroll engraved rear sight of one standing and two folding leaves graduated to “250” yards and each with platinum inlaid center line, signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND STREET. LONDON” and with scroll engraved doll’s head extension. Action with carved percussion fences, non-rebounding back action locks each signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND” and with blued sliding safety catch in front of the hammers, and furniture including pistol grip trigger guard with checkered finger rest. The whole with best quality border and scroll engraving. The underside of the barrels and water table with London black powder proof marks. Well figured 14 1/4 inch stock with checkered horn buttplate, raised cheek piece and checkered grip and forearm, the latter with key fastener. The underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial escutcheon and blued sling eye, the corresponding sling eye is fitted beneath the barrels. In brass cornered oak and leather fitted case lined in green baize, the lid with printed H. Holland trade label with hand written loading notes to one edge. The exterior of the case lid with circular brass escutcheon named to “W.B. BROCKLEHURST”. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection

Rating Definition:

Barrels retaining 99% rebrowned finish, engraving and signature clear, file cut matting well defined. Action with faded traces of original casehardened finish on the water table, the inside of the forearm iron with strong original casehardened finish, the remainder bright. Engraving clear throughout. Stock refinished, checkering well defined. Mechanically excellent. Case with external age related storage and handling marking, straps and handle replaced. Lining with some age related rubbing and minor staining, partially relined and reblocked at the muzzle end of the barrel compartment. The trade label with some age related light wear and staining. Overall in very good condition.
