Exquisite Geoffrey Casbard Master Engraved, Signed, and Gold Inlaid Westley Richards Assisted Opening Hand Detachable Sidelock Double Barrel Ejector Shotgun with Case

Blued steel barrels with dual white bead sights on the matted, solid rib marked with a gold "1" at the breech. The barrels are marked "WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co." and "BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND" on the left and right respectively and each has a one inch wedge of oak leaf style engraving on a gold filled background. The chambers are marked "2 3/4" on the flats with standard Birmingham proofs from the period. The casehardened assisted opening sidelock action is beautifully engraved and gold inlaid with floral designs and game scenes as well as gold inlaid "WESTLEY RICHARDS" on either lock plate. The game scenes are all gold inlaid and display a setter in a field on the left lock plate, a pointer in a field on the right lock plate, and four quail in flight on the underside. The action features side clips, flush hand detachable thumb screw, bushed firing pins, oak leaf carved fences with gold filled background, gold plated double triggers, and tang mounted automatic safety switch. The trigger guard is gold inlaid with the initials "R.T.H." in Gothic script. The engraver's signature "CASBARD" (Geoffrey Casbard) is present on the lock plates below the dogs. Beautiful, highly figured, multi-point checkered walnut forearm with engraved fittings and an Anson button release. The straight grip stock is of equal beauty with tear drop caved flats and an engraved skeleton buttplate over the checkered bare butt. Included is an extra set of 27 inch 12 gauge barrels with the same pattern engraving at the breech, dual white beads on a matted, solid rib with a gold "2" at the breech. They are marked for 2 3/4 inch chambers, have standard Birmingham proofs, and are numbered "19423". Also included is a leather bound takedown case marked "R. T. HAYLEY" on the lid with Westley Richards trade label, cleaning tools, nickel snap caps and oiler, and three Westley Richards turn screws. The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was built in 1973 and had two 27 inch barrel sets marked "1" and "2" as well as "19422" and "19423" respectively and that both had 2 3/4 inch chambers when it was sent to Mr. T Hayley. Barrel measurements for "2" (R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both marked .729 inches and measure .730/.730 inches; choke constriction .030/.037 inches; minimum wall thickness .030/.026 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for "1" (R/L): bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both marked .729 inches and measure .730/.733 inches; choke constriction .006/.012 inches; minimum wall thickness .033/.030 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 8 oz. Provenance: Firearms for Freedom Collection

ConditionVery fine overall, retaining 90% original blue on the barrels and trigger guard and 99% of the faded case colors with vibrant colors in the protected areas. The gold fill beneath the engraving in places has begun to flake leaving about 75% of the original. The lower left hand side finger of the stock has a slight warp and is no longer flush to the action and there is a tiny chip from the left side of the forearm. The wood is otherwise has a few minor marks and crisp checkering. The case is very good with absent handle (inside case) and accessories are very fine. Mechanically excellent.
