Exceptional Documented Number 5 Engraved Winchester Model 21 Deluxe 20 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun Two Barrel Set Owned by S. H. Arnolt with Factory Letters

Blued, chopper lump, Winchester proof steel barrels with dual steel bead sights on the factory raised, matted vent rib, standard Winchester proofs on the water table and barrel flats, 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors, and modified/full chokes. The right barrel is marked from the factory as a full choke but has been opened to modified and re-stamped "MOD." on the barrel flat. The blued receiver displays Winchester No. 5 engraving featuring fine floral scroll surrounding oval game scenes on the left, right, and underside as well as on the trigger guard. The left scene is a pheasant standing in a field, the right shows a grouse in a similar scene, the underside is a setter retrieving a game bird, and the trigger guard is that same setter on point in a field. Single selective trigger and automatic tang mounted safety. Deluxe, highly figured, multi-point checkered walnut beavertail forearm with engraved fittings and a pistol grip stock with hard rubber grip cap reading "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co." around the perimeter and checkered bare butt. Included is a second set of 26 inch 20 gauge barrels with steel mid and red front bead sights on a factory raised, vent rib, 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors and "WS-1"/WS-2" marked chokes. The extra barrel set is numbered to the gun, and has standard Winchester proofs. The configuration listed above, with the exception of the opened modified choke for the first barrel set and the No. 5 engraving, is confirmed by the letter from the Cody Firearms Museum as well as the April 9, 1947, date of final inspection at the factory and its shipment to Von Lengerke and Antoine. Also included is a letter from Griffin & Howe (the holders of Von Lengerke and Antoine's records) which does verify the No. 5 engraving at the time and indicates that this set was sold to an S. H. Arnolt of Warsaw, Indiana on June 20, 1947. Arnolt was an American industrialist who became famous in the 1950s and 60s for his unique imported cars. His company combined the frames of British car companies such as Bristol, MG, Bentley, and Aston with Italian made Bertone bodies creating a hybrid of the two, mostly for the U.S. market. Barrel measurements for the 26 inch set (R/L): bores 9 inches from the breech measure .613/.613 inches; choke constriction .005(jug)/.009 inches; minimum wall thickness .028/.029 inches. Barrel and stock measurements for 28 inch set (R/L): bores 9 inches from the breech measure .613/.613 inches; choke constriction .016/.022 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.031 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 1 oz.

ConditionExceptionally fine, retaining 85% plus original blue finish overall with most of the loss concentrated on the trigger plate and light general handling evidence. The wood is very fine with numerous scattered small scratches, a few small pressure dents, areas of thinning varnish, and crisp checkering. The extra barrel set is very fine with a few scuffs, a tiny spot of oxidation on the left barrel, and 98% original finish. Mechanically excellent.
