Scarce Post-World War II Commercial Smith & Wesson Model 1917 Revolver with Box and Factory Letter

This is a very rare post World War II S&W revolver with fewer than 1,000 commercial versions ever made typically in a serial range of S209792-S210782, with this example offered being an exception. "The Standard Catalog Of Smith & Wesson" states "One knowledgeable collector reports that these guns are sometimes encountered without the "S" serial number prefix". Included factory letter states this revolver, serial number 210261, was shipped on June 26, 1946 to Belknap Hardware Company of Louisville, Kentucky. It has the same features as the U.S. Army M1917 Smith & Wesson revolver only with a better grade of blue finish, checkered walnut grips with the Smith & Wesson logo, and without any property markings. Numbers matching barrel, cylinder, and extractor. Right grip matching number stamped underneath. Color casehardened hammer and trigger. Lanyard loop on the butt. Includes original box with blue label marked "U.S. ARMY 45 MODEL". Provenance: The Dr. Robert Azar Collection

ConditionExcellent, retaining 97% original blue finish with some light handling marks, light muzzle wear with a small brown pitted patch on bottom of barrel and another on the bow of the trigger guard, and light cylinder drag line. Grips are excellent with some light handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Box is fine with some light wear, a corner tear, and evenly aged dark patina.
