Description:

Manufactured from 1861-65, these arms were made with machinery captured from the Harpers Ferry Armory in April of 1861 and moved to Confederate ordnance facilities in Richmond, Virginia. This carbine has the distinctive "humpback" lock which was made from forgings and dies taken from Harpers Ferry Armory. The locks were originally intended for use with the Maynard tape priming system on the U.S. Model 1855 rifled musket. Richmond Armory had no use for the priming device, so to quicken production they merely used the old dies. The lock is dated "1864" behind the hammer and marked "C.S./RICHMOND, VA." ahead of the hammer. The lock markings, date, and lower humpback would be consistent with the Type III arms. The left barrel flat at the breech is correctly marked with the "V/P/eagle head" markings (faint). The carbine was originally finished armory bright with a casehardened lock. Tall tapered base iron blade front and three leaf folding rear sights. The carbine is mounted with a full straight grip stock with a brass forend cap, third swivel hole underneath the buttstock (swivel absent), brass carbine buttplate. Stock has an illegible name carved on the underside to the left of the trigger, large upside down initials "AB" carved on the right of the buttstock, and some X's lightly scratched on the left of the buttstock. Complete with the correct iron ram rod with tulip head.

Rating Definition:

Very good, the carbine shows the service use that is typical of Confederate weapons. Lightly polished with applied brown finish, areas of period flash pitting on the lock, hammer, and edges of the barrel flats, with sharp lock markings. The brass buttplate and forearm cap have an artificially aged patina. The stock is very good with scratches, chips, and period carvings. Mechanically excellent.
