Attractive Wilson Signed Pattern 1853 Enfield Style Volunteer Percussion Rifle-Musket

There were multiple Wilson gunmakers active in London at the time including John Wilson at 6 St. Edward Street, Kings Cross. The rifle is similar to the Pattern 1853 Rifle-Muskets used by the British military at the time but is more finely finished. These rifles were used both for match shooting and for volunteer rifle corps service in the 1860s due to tensions with France. It has a fixed notch front and 1,000 yard folding ladder rear sight with "HB" on the right side of the base, London commercial proofs at the breech, "WILSON" signed lock with light border engraving, sling swivels on the upper barrel band and front of the trigger guard, light border engraving on the furniture, checkered grasping section, and checkered wrist of the stock.

ConditionVery good plus with strong traces of original blue finish remaining and fading to smooth plum brown on the balance, 40% original case colors on the lock, aged patina on the brass furniture, minor oxidation, and generally only minor wear. The stock is very fine and has smooth oiled finish, crisp checkering, small chips on the front of both left and right flats, some minor dings, and light scratches. Mechanically excellent.
