This is a scarce example of a Winchester Model 70 experimental prototype that is an interesting piece of the developmental history of "the rifleman's rifle." This prototype appears to be testing the feasibility of manufacturing the Model 70 with a detachable box magazine. The only visible markings are Winchester factory oval proofs on the upper left of the barrel and receiver at the breech, ".243" on the upper right of the barrel, and the desirable experimental serial number "EXP.3" on the upper right of the receiver ring. It is fitted with beaded blade front and folding notch sights, sling swivels, the experimental detachable box magazine and magazine catch, tang safety, smooth pistol grip stock, and a serrated plastic buttplate.

Excellent, retains 97% of the original blue finish with some "crackling" of the black finish on the trigger guard and scattered light handling marks on the balance. The wood is very fine with some scattered minor dings and scuffs and retaining most of the varnish. Mechanically excellent.
