Description:

Manufactured in the early 1930's, this is a scarce example of a Stoeger marked Mauser Luger pistol. This pistol is partially a product of the retailer, A.F. Stoeger, overestimating their sales capabilities, and thus D.W.M. over producing parts to make pistols for them. These parts were produced in the late 1920's, just before D.W.M. was bought out by Quandt Group in 1929, with the parts being subsequently transferred to Mauser in 1930. These parts were then assembled and finished by Mauser, who had reestablished contact with Stoeger. Due to a patent suit in early 1920's by Stoeger, these pistols were stamped with a third line of markings, with most examples imported to the U.S. and sold by Stoeger having the word "GENUINE" added in front of that line by the retailer. These DWM/Mauser Stoeger marked Lugers are found in the 400v-599v serial blocks. This example is made even more scarce by the fact that the "GENUINE" marking was never added to this pistol by Stoeger. This is because this pistol was one of 25 that was purchased by the Electric Company of Israel (Palestine at the time), which is documented in a letter signed by E. Galili, Chief Security Officer of the company. Also included is a copy of a letter from John Pearson to Don Hallock detailing most of the before mentioned information. The chamber is marked with the American Eagle crest, and the front toggle has the "DWM" monogram. The right side of the barrel extension is rolled marked with "A.F. STOEGER INC/NEW YORK." with the right side of the frame roll marked "LUGER - REGISTERED U.S. PATENT OFFICE". The front of the frame and bottom of the barrel are stamped with the serial number and there are "crown/N" proofs on the barrel and barrel extension. Fixed sights, straw colored small parts, and unmarked aluminum base magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very fine, retains 95% plus of the period refinished blue finish with some slight pitting visible under the blue on the barrel and front of the frame, and 98% of the straw colors with some scattered light handling marks. The grips are excellent with some scattered light blemishes in the overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. A rare piece of Luger history associated with the birth of Israel as it was in service in 1948 when it all happened.
